Having worked as a fulltime English, Film and Media Studies teacher in a Secondary School in Lewisham, I understand the different challenges students face in the classroom on a day-to-day basis. It is a somewhat sad but understandable reality that not every student is able to reach their full potential in a busy classroom every day. However, a student’s potential is always there, sometimes they just need a more bespoke approach to make them believe in it and fulfil it. As a tutor, it is my duty to find the approach that works best for a student and empowers them to make progress.
Through my time as a teacher, as well as my research for my Diploma in Education, I have developed a strong understanding of the National Curriculum, as well as its assessments and mark schemes. Also, I have tried and assessed many different learning theories and teaching styles with pupils in many different contexts. This extensive experience enables me to be a flexible and reactive tutor that will help my students in the way that best suits them.
There are so many pressures on young people today, which too often strip the joy and excitement out of learning. For me, tutoring is about helping a student find a new confidence that will turn stress and fear into curiosity.
I am currently working remotely as an Education Consultant for a project in Uganda that works to deliver rehabilitative Life Skills to children in the Remand Home, street children and local girls’ schools. The nature of my work allows me to run a flexible schedule so I am able to effectively commit myself to my tutees and their needs. I have worked as a Mentor for Debate Mate for three years, teaching debating skills to children across the country, and I have taught as an English, Media and Film teacher at a Secondary School in Lewisham for two years. I absolutely love working with children and teenagers and one day I hope to do this more specifically through spoken word and theatre.
